PFPA Privacy Impact Assessments

A Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) is a comprehensive analysis of how information is handled to ensure compliance with privacy laws and regulations, and to manage potential privacy risks to individuals.

The primary purpose of a PIA is to demonstrate that privacy protections are systematically integrated into the development and operation of all information technology (IT) systems that collect, maintain, or disseminate Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This structured review allows agencies to make fully informed, risk-based decisions, ensuring that the collection and use of PII are both necessary and proportional to the agency's mission. This process is conducted in compliance with the E-Government Act of 2002, Section 208, Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Memorandum M-03-22, and Department of War Instruction (DoDI) 5400.16.

PFPA publishes its PIAs to foster public trust through transparency and to clearly communicate how PII is handled and safeguarded.
